As we have anticipated, another “wave” and lockdown occurred. A third and possible fourth “wave” are likely. The end of these lockdowns is only the start of the delayed intercommunity spread of COVID-19. Until enough people have been vaccinated or naturally inoculated, at-risk people will be no less vulnerable to COVID-19 complications in the months ahead, shopping for essentials or attending to social and work responsibilities.
Knowing how to functionally “shield” – how to protect oneself from infection whilst trying to continue with normal day-to-day activities – will allow some semblance of normality.
I recommend that this article https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-06-26-distance-dose-dispersion-an-experts-guide-on-covid-19-risks-in-south-africa-and-how-to-manage-them/#gsc.tab=0 as practical guide. NICD https://www.nicd.ac.za/ and Discovery Health websites also have useful sources of information.
Try to source FFP2 or 3 Respirators to reduce the chances of getting an infection in the weeks and months ahead. These Respirators are stocked by online/hardware outlets. The CDC/WHO/3M technical advisory says these are near to equivalent to N95 Biohazard Respirator. Note that surgical masks only reduce someone giving others an infection.
Unless contraindicated, get the COVID-19 and annual Flu vaccinations.
When to call COVID 19 NICD Hotline
Within the past 2 weeks you travelled overseas, especially to a recognised COVID 19 hotspot, OR had direct close contact with a KNOWN Covid 19 positive contact OR someone who is currently waiting for their COVID 19 results OR someone who travelled abroad and had, or has developed, flu-like symptoms.
AND at least one of the following: cough, sore throat, shortness of breath or fever [≥ 38°C (measured) or history of fever (subjective)
What to do: if you have one, put on a surgical mask when within speaking distance of anyone, stay at home, call the NICD hotline and follow NICD advice. A laboratory referral form is available from the NICD site.
What NOT to do: go to your pharmacist, clinic, clinic sister, GP, Specialist, hospital or laboratory without letting them know.
